Preventive care in pediatric dentistry is all about developing good oral hygiene habits early on and maintaining them throughout your child’s life. This includes regular dental check-ups, cleanings, and fluoride treatments to prevent tooth decay and other oral health issues.

We also recommend that parents educate their children on good oral hygiene practices, including brushing and flossing, and the importance of a healthy diet. By instilling these practices early on, children can develop healthy habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.

At our practice, we believe that preventive care is key to maintaining optimal oral health in children. We are committed to providing the highest quality care in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Teeth Cleanings & Oral Exams

We recommend a cleaning and check up at least every six months. We will clean away plaque and tartar from your child’s teeth, then Dr. Alison will perform a comprehensive exam to make sure that their teeth, tongue, and gums are strong and healthy. Dr. Alison will discuss her overall findings with you and let you know if your child might need any additional dental treatment, and all safe and reasonable options to do so.

Digital & Low Radiation X-rays

Any necessary x-rays that are needed to diagnose hidden cavities or possible infections will be taken. At Waterloo Pediatric Dentistry, we do not routinely take x-rays until the age of four. Dental x-rays are often the best tool to achieve an accurate diagnosis, and our team will walk you and your little one through every step of the process to keep you informed and comfortable. X-rays are quick, and they’ll give you peace of mind knowing that any small dental issue will be addressed before it becomes a bigger problem.

Fluoride

Routine fluoride treatments consist of a fluoride-rich varnish that one of our team will apply to your child’s teeth after their cleaning appointment. This fluoride helps attract minerals to your child’s teeth, strengthening them and even reversing the first stage of tooth decay.

Sealants

Dental sealants are an ideal method for preventing cavities. If maintained and taken care of, a sealant can prevent cavity formation for up to 10 years! We will apply a thin layer of plastic resin to your child’s tooth after it’s cleaned, then harden this resin with a UV light. The transparent plastic creates a strong barrier that prevents contact with oral bacteria and acid to prevent cavities on the chewing surfaces of teeth.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

SDF uses a special blend of silver and fluoride that is applied directly to a cavity to halt its progression. SDF is used as an alternative or interim treatment to fillings for baby (and occasionally adult) teeth. It may be a good option if you don’t think a filling is right for your child, or if your child can’t safely tolerate a filling. This liquid medicine does permanently stain the tooth black.
